Lungs of the River is a collaborative sculptural and sound installation responding to the Birrarung. Textiles, seed pods, moss and pistachio shells form a living, breathing, sensing organism, depicting a breath of life, and an interconnected ecosystem that investigates the role of wind and water. Rustling seed pods, layered with sounds that remind us of laying by the riverbed. The work hangs within welded metal rings, weathered through burial in garden soil, where cycles of watering encouraged oxidation amongst living plants. Textiles dyed over an open fire with gum leaves, rhubarb leaves and rust create reflections of tones of colour familiar to the landscapes around us.
